With the Summer now and truly closing in, we reach that time of year, which seems to be happening more frequently, where we have a surprising drought of things to see at the cinema! Yes we do have several major blockbusters, but mainly for film series that we are all starting to get a little bit tired of. There’s no more one off blockbuster’s anymore, like an Armageddon, or ones which could become series but don’t initially promise it, like Independence Day anymore. It’s all either films for a series you have never watched, or more superheroes you’ve never heard of for a series which is losing steam fast, or live action variations based on animated classics.
But, there are though some films worth looking out for, or keeping in mind of, should you fancy going to the cinema for. So, with the halfway mark of the year just a few weeks away, I thought I would highlight some film’s I am looking forward to, and others I might see if I really want to see something at the cinema (as well as one which I don’t really fancy given the previous film, but may end up seeing with friends anyway).
This isn’t though a top ten/five list, just a list of films, ordered in their current release order, based on their Wikipedia pages. So, without further ado, here are some Other Films I Might go and see at the Cinema, in the Current Year better known as 2023; Enjoy!
Oppenheimer – I am starting to feel a little turned off watching anything new from Christopher Nolan, all thanks to not being able to hear a single word of dialogue in Tenet. Hopefully though he’s got the sound fixed, and perhaps we can move on, with his take on a major historical figure in J. Robert Oppenheimer!
Meg 2: The Trench – The first Meg film was an absolute treat. It was big, explosive, action packed, and featured some terrific actors. It was at the time, much like Independence Day above; a one-off summer blockbuster, with possibilities for more films, but didn’t promise them. Well, thankfully then, we got another one to look forward to!
Blue Beetle – I have never heard of this Blue Beetle character, but I have discovered in the last couple of years, that the slate of DC movies have been far more exciting than the long list of Marvel movies; so I am willing to give this one a go. Plus, if it turns out to be bad, then it won’t be a complete disappointment, as I have no expectations for it!
Kraven the Hunter – Kraven The Hunter is a really interesting character, as he can be both bad or good, depending on his loyalties and moods. So, this could be a cool anti-hero possibility of a movie, and as Kraven is such a unique character, all-be-it one I know pretty little about, it could be an interesting movie to discover more of his character!
Dune: Part Two – Now, whilst there are several films on this list I am indeed very much looking forward to, this isn’t one of them! The first Dune film was an overly long film, with barely any plot, which relied on too many visions, as well as the need for the viewer to have read the book before hand. I hadn’t, so I didn’t enjoy it. It does make me think then that the first film is a failure of a film, because a film should provide everything the viewer needs to enjoy the film, and not rely on them reading the book before or after to understand it. In the case then of this film, I might go and see it with some friends, but unlikely to on my own. Maybe this one though will provide a full and clear narrative, one that the first film failed to provide!
Godzilla 2023 – It’s super exciting to be a Godzilla fan right now, with two films currently in production. One is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, and then this one which is a brand new film from Japan directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Ironically it’s not the first time that Yamazaki has worked with Godzilla, as he placed a cameo appearance of the monster in the film Always: Sunset on Third Street 2. Not much right now is known about this one, other than it will take place possibly during or after World War II. My only worry right now though, is the possibility that I may not get to see it this year, as it’s super hard to see new Japanese Godzilla films in the UK, as they are rarely released in either the Cinema, on TV, or even on DVD or Blu-ray!
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes – It’s nice to see that after a good few years, one of my favourite film series of all time has a new film on the way to be excited about. Based on the book of the same name by Suzanne Collins; this new entry is a prequel film chronicling the lives of key characters in The Hunger Games, many, many years before the events of the first film!
Next Goal Wins – Don’t really know much about this film so far, sort of forgot it was coming out and that it was in production, it’s been a long few years since I first heard about it. But whilst I don’t know much about it, any new film by Taika Waititi is definitely worth keeping an eye on!
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – I didn’t originally see the first Aquaman in cinemas, didn’t really care for or about it. But then a few years ago, I watched the first film, and really enjoyed it. So, definitely fancy seeing how this one turns out. Hopefully it will conclude in a similarly epic, and exciting way!
