Yesterday I watched Prey; and it was pretty good! Directed by (Dan Trachtenberg), and starring (Amber Midthunder), (Dakota Beavers), and (Dane DiLiegro); Prey is a science fiction action film and the seventh film in the Predator franchise. Set in the Northern Great Plains in 1719, the film follows a young Comanche woman, who wishes to become a hunter, but in trying to prove herself, must face new threats, not of her world! Prey is a pretty clever instalment in the franchise, as it tries hard to move on from its horror roots, into a more action paced one, whilst honouring it’s mythology. The lead character is really well developed, as she tries hard to move on from being seen as a joke from the other male hunters, and prove herself worthy of the title. During the earlier stages of the film, it likes to suggest the Predator’s actions, whilst subtly hinting at something else to come. The fight scenes are well choreographed, and the slightly more primal look does allow for more a originally designed Predator, whilst still carrying the all important hallmarks. The only real issue, is that whilst the film hints at another potential threat, it doesn’t hide early on that the lead monster is indeed the Predator. It had a chance to create some intrigue and deception towards the audience, leading to a cool new reveal, but that’s sort of wasted, and decides to reveal early on that it is in fact…The Predator. But other than that, a pretty good film altogether!
