Recently I have been playing Far Cry 6; and it was ok! Developed by Ubisoft Toronto; Far Cry 6 is a First Person Shooter, and the sixth main instalment in the Far Cry series. This time, the game is set on a fictional Caribbean island called Yara, and the player takes on the role of a guerrilla fighter called Dani (Nisa Gunduz or Sean Rey), who along with a group of revolutionaries, is trying to topple the dictatorship government run by El Presidente” Antón Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito). I have always had a fondness for the Far Cry series, ever since I played Far Cry 2 on the PlayStation 3. I have played every main game since 2, and most of the spin-offs too. I always look forward to playing the new release. This one though, is a bit…well…odd…
Far Cry 6 does not feel, look, taste, sound, or smell like a Far Cry game! Whilst it does have some Far Cry-ness, such as a large open map, with some wildness, and the ever present charismatic unhinged lead villain; there is not much here that would resonate as a Far Cry game. It looks like quite a basic FPS, with the name Far Cry attached to it. Yes, there are some improvements, such as the ability to holster your weapon, and at long last a sizeable city or town to explore rather than a few random fortresses; but other than that, it’s mostly vexing! The weapon wheel exists, but is limited to three choices of weapons and a pistol, and the game focusses far too heavily on these supremo/resolver weapons, which don’t really do anything that could be considered helpful! There is also no proper levelling up system: not like Far Cry 3, where you had a tattoo, which you could upgrade throughout the game allowing better perks and abilities, this time its based entirely on a randomly generated ranking system, and the off-chance you might find some black powder! Carrying extra medication/grenades/general things is reliant again on resolver’s and supremo’s, with the perks being so minimal, it’s infuriating! Back in the good old days of Far Cry (mainly 3 and 4), you had to hunt wildlife to make better packs and holsters and clothing; this time there’s practically none of that, as there is not much in abundant wildlife to hunt. And then unlocking better weapons is once again down to ranking up, with a limited selection each time. Back again during those good old 3 and 4 days, you unlocked weapons by liberating towers; but if you didn’t want to wait, you could still buy the weapons at a premium. Here, you unlock a few measly weapons, and then still have to pay for them! And then there’s the mission side of the game. There is no linear objective stream to follow. Whilst this does mean you can take your time, and do what missions you want to do, it does easily cause your mind to wander, and when you get back to the more lead objectives for the main campaign, you feel disconnected from it all, and just don’t care! And then when you visit some friendly NPC locations, it can jump into third person, which is also very irksome! And then there’s the hunt/wheel/thing where if you kill too may bad guys, they come looking for you, which again is just very irritating!
There is enough here to enjoy the game at a very basic level, as it’s still a simply made FPS. It does have it’s merits too, with new level designs, better AI, and a whole city to (eventually) explore, but that’s about it. It is fun, to begin with, but eventually you just don’t care about it. I haven’t even finished the main game yet, I just feel so disconnected from it. It’s a Far Cry game, that doesn’t even deserve to be called a Far Cry game, because in a lot of respects…it simply isn’t!
