Mini TV Review – Overlord (Season 1)

Recently I have been watching the first season of Overlord; and its pretty cool! Created by Kugane Maruyama, and starring Chris Guerrero, Elizabeth Maxwell, and Anastasia Munoz, and based on the light novel series of the same name by Maruyama; Overlord is an anime series about an overpowered guild leader called Momonga/Ainz Ooal Gown, who finds himself trapped inside an MMORPG, that was supposed to have been shut down! Overlord is an interesting show; it’s first season could be seen as something of a firm foundation to build on, but in doing that, it feels like it’s holding back. Sure, there is quite a bit of explaining to do, to inform the viewer as to what is going on, but as a result its easy to get lost, and even bored in the constant theory. Some of these pieces are also so quickly explained, you begin to wonder if you are missing out on important details. It has quite possibly, as much talking in each episode (if not more, who knew that was even possible?) than the average Yu-Gi-Oh! episode. It’s slightly annoying too, as the opening and closing credits suggest fast paced, and action packed battles; but they are very few in number. But, during these cases, we get treated to something else, the rather fun scenes featuring the rather sex craved NPC‘s Ainz Ooal Gown surrounds himself with. Their scenes are not so much lessons in theory, and more like rivals/friends having a nice chat. So at frequent times you are besieged by information, and then at others, nice friendly chats between rivals, which can be rather funny. And whilst the fight scenes are sadly few in number, it’s well worth sticking around. As once in a blue moon, you get to witness epic edge of your seat clashes, which are ‘SOOOOOOO’ worth the wait. It’s not the best Anime series I have ever seen, but that’s not to say it’s bad. It’s actually a nice and relaxing time filler show, that isn’t entirely boring compared to other things you may watch to complete the same practice. It’s first season is a firm foundation, the opening act. Now that it’s begun, and now we have the boring but important bits out of the way, maybe the following seasons may be more visually enthralling (at least I wish and hope so, I mean it’s set in a fantasy video game, you don’t need to explain how to fight, you just need to get on with it)!
