Yesterday I watched Blue Steel; and it was a bit dull! Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Silver, and Clancy Brown; Blue Steel is an action thriller, about a rookie cop, who gets the attention of a psycotic stock trader after he witnesses her gunning down a suspect in a robbery! It’s basically a lover-sick stalker story, with a police like element to it. You have a rookie cop who gets the attention of a seemingly normal person, who is in fact a psychopath. That’s the basic idea of the story, but whilst the film is trying to make a prolonged, anxious, sequence of events: it actually comes across more as a hypnotic set of images, whose sole purpose is just to increase the film’s run time. It takes quite a while to get things moving, and most of the first act feels like the opening scene from Falling Down, but remaining in the car for the full 20 minutes. The film eventually picks up, but the only time where it really grabs any of your attention are the scenes featuring either Silver, or Brown. Silver’s character is really well done, and with him constantly slipping out of receiving his comupence, it can really grind your gears, but in a good way. The film does make good use of it’s supporting characters to, creating good characters, and highlighting real life issues. But unfortunately they are all intertwinned in this sadly unappealing film, whose ending is far too long; as the action packed scenes would look much cooler and more adrenaline fuelling, if it was running at normal speed. So yeah, it’s a bit dull!
