Mini Film Review – Monkey Man

I have just seen Monkey Man; and it was seriously good! Directed by Dev Patel, and starring Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Dev Patel; Monkey Man is an action thriller film, about a seemingly annonymous man, who attempts to reawaken an ancient legend, so he can bring hope and justice to the poor and powerless! Monky Man struggles in two distinct areas, firstly the early fight/action scenes can be blurry and confusing, and it’s really difficult to even see what is going on. Secondly, the opening act doesn’t really set up a story, or get the plot moving in any direction. However, it is so truly worth it to stick around. The film becomes this incredible, almost super hero like action film, as one man sees both the horrors of his youth, and the pain and suffering being handed out to the poor and powerless of his hometown, from the increbly ruthless rich. It’s from this setting, and the hope and belief in the downtrodden, that he finds his inner strength, his inner being, to help them get justice, by employing the only tactic the cruel understand. The supporting cast are terrific, occasionally funny too, and the ending fight scenes themselves are glorious to behold, turning this film into a serious competitor to The Raid‘s throne. It’s a really clever film, that tells many stories, bringing them all together in the end, before dishing out some well earned payback!
