I have just watched Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and it was pretty good! Directed by Wes Ball, and starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, and Kevin Durand; Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a science fiction action film, and the tenth film in the Planet of the Apes film series. Taking place many generations after War for the Planet of the Apes, this film follows a young Chimpanzee as he embarks on a journey to save his clan from a power hungry Bonobo. Any film that was going to follow War was going to have a hard time of living up to it, afterall; it is the best Planet of the Apes film to date. Well, here, it doesn’t live up to it, but that’s not the point of it. This is a new story, not entirely a continuation, so it’s not about the old, but setting up the new (although the plot is weirdly simillar to 10,000 BC). So, we get great new characters, forming a firm protagonist foundation, as well as creating a deadly sinister antagonist, that will almost pleasantly remind you of Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland. But we also have the human side to consider too, and in this we get a terrific performance from Allan, who provides an alternate view of this future, by referencing the past, while setting up a potentially deadly future too. The film carries some nice references to the original Planet of the Apes as well, especially in the soundtrack. The ending is a tiny bit annoying, as you don’t know if it’s trying to be ominous on purpose, as it feels like it’s building up to something, which then never comes, but, altogether however, it’s a really great entry in this iconic series; creating a firm foundation, for an exciting future!
