Yesterday I watched Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom; and it was pretty fun! Directed by James Wan, and starring Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Aquaman, and sequel to the film of the same name. Set four years after the events of the first film, Aquaman has become a father, and is also bit bored of his duties as King of Atlantis, so when Black Manta finds an ancient Trident, things suddenly perk up for the oceanic hero! I, like many am fully aware of some of this films troublesome production worries, which did put me off from seeing it a little, worrying what the end product would look like. But when I sat down to watch it, all of those feelings drifted away, as I got lost in a visually appealing and fun superhero movie. Not fun as in say camp like Joel Schumacher‘s Batman films, but fun as enjoyable, with explosive action, the occassional moment of comedy/slapstick/toilet humour, great fight scenes, epic visuals, and more. Narratively, it’s a great improvement over the first film, which wasted nearly an hour with quite a bit of borring set-up. Here it just jumps in where the first film finished, and carried on with the energy. And it doesn’t feel as long, or dronning as most of the first film, here, there’s always something happening, to keep you interested (in fact the only thing taking my attention off the film, was that my armchair has developed some kind of lean to the left hand side). Plus, the film is incredibly colourful. Not colourful as in a meaningful, or metaphorical way, but coulourful is in visually bright, pretty, and flourescent. Why can’t more films be this pretty to look at? It’s more than likely not the greatest Superhero film ever made, or the most meaningful, or dramatic, or even award worthy. But that doesn’t really matter, because it’s an enjoyable, and above all visually colourful film; when you want to watch something undeniably fun!
Although I would like to have seen more of that Massive Lobster from the first film.
