Mini Book Review – The Fear

Recently I have been reading The Fear; and it was alright! Written by Charlie Higson, and published by Hachette; The Fear is a post-apocalyptic young adult horror novel, and the third book in The Enemy book series. Taking place between the events of the second book (The Dead), and The Enemy, the story focuses on a character called DogNut, who takes a band of kids on a journey across a zombie infested London, to try and find who he thinks is his true love. To begin with, the book was a really interesting and fun read, which early on sets up what sounds like is going to be the book’s key villain/monster. Now it has been quite a few considerable years since I read The Dead, so I did find myself looking through online Wiki’s to remember who some characters were in the previous book. As the story moves along, new and interesting chacters are introduced, whilst relationships begin to blossom in the lead party. But as the book reaches it’s half-way point; the big monster introduced earlier on, is killed, and it turns into this slow plodding road movie like story. And then when the final act comes along, you discover that it’s just re-telling you things that happened in the first book, with the story ending not with the strong lead character, but ending on a very anti-climactic finish, which feels like it should be in a completely different book!
