Nightwatch with Steve Scott was a late night reality documentary series that aired in the UK on ITV between 2008, and 2010! It was presented by Steve Scott, who would open and close the show, but otherwise largely stay out of the picture. It documented a lot of different things over it’s two year-ish run, but it’s main focus was on the work of the Police.
The show was simillar to other shows of it’s kind at the time, such as Road Wars, Brit Cops, and Street Crime UK. Largely it involved following the police on late night duties, arresting criminals for many offences, as well as helping with members of the public also. The show featured a rather memorable opening title sequence too, plus covered other things not seen in shows like this before. I do have faint memories of seeing one episode, where a prison van was called out to transport a large group of offenders, as well as one episode where the police handcuffed literally everyone, when raiding the house one morning.
But it didn’t just follow the police, as it also featured the occassional episode focussing on the work of paramedics, and soldiers. My personal favourite shows to watch were the ones focussing on the work of late night hospital staff. Now, anyone who knows me, is aware of my squeamish-ness, towards anything hospital related. But the Nightwatch episodes that focused on hospital staff were pretty interesting, as instead of telling a nice story, or a happy experience, it really showed the real stress and trauma for those who work in the medical profession, and their patients. I can still remember the look of one worried doctor, when a patient was considering leaving without treatment.
Nightwatch with Steve Scott may sound like a pretty bland show, that followed the same format as other shows of it’s kind in a flooded marketplace. But I really enjoyed watching it night after night. I enjoyed it soo much, that I risked being too tired for college the next day, just to see as much of it as I could…or dared. It’s a shame then, that very little of the show exists now. Not a lot was preserved. It’s just one of those shows, that’s doomed to be forgotten!
