I first heard of Ultraman via a 1998 BBC documentary about Godzilla, but it wasn’t until 2023, that I finally got to see anything Ultraman at great length! I sort of had a base idea as to who Ultraman was, I certainly knew what he looked like, and that the series was originally produced by Tsuburaya Productions (which was founded by the great Eiji Tsuburaya). But other than that, I didn’t know an awful lot.
The above mentioned documentary sort of introduced Ultraman to me, but since then the only footage I ever saw of Ultraman, was in a trailer (that I can’t find anymore) for the 2004 film Ultraman: The Next. I watched that trailer many times over the years, and it did look really good, but I didn’t see much else of it other than a few random clips.
Shin Ultraman was the first time I ever got to see anything Ultraman at long length. And it was an interesting film, with some artistic choices in the direction of viisual effects. Basically it was a modern film, but with effects like they were lifted from the original series, and then cleaned up to a modern standard. Might not look great compared to other films released around the same time, but artistically speaking they were rather cool.
Shin Ultraman’s teaser trailer was also really cool, as it largely kept you guessing, and didn’t reveal all that much. Sure, it showed off some unpolished visual effects, but the way it all played out was rather gripping.
You get military styled drum beats, showing off characters looking through computers, whilst military vehicles and personal can be seen being deployed. Then we get to see more of that, but with the added bonus of seeing several monsters, which all leads up to the reveal of Ultraman himself.
This is a pretty cool teaser trailer, as though whilst it doesn’t say much, it still presents what it has, in a very intense fashion.
