Mini Film Review – Weapons

Yesterday I watched Weapons; and it was really interesting, and haunting! Directed by Zach Cregger, and starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Cary Christopher, and Amy Madigan; Weapons is a mystery horror film, which takes place after one strange night, when 17 children from the same class, disappeared, all at the same time! Weapons is a really interesting idea which brings up fond memories to other horror stories, like Nope, and The Midwich Cuckoos. You have this initial setup, about the disappearances, but the it jumps ahead in time, to a month later, which is where the story truly begins. We then get a series of chapters, which highlight personal stories of leading characters actions, surrounding this phenomenon after it has taken place. So we see the lives of a grieving father, the class’s teacher, a burglar, a cop, and so on. And as these stories begin to pan out and connect, very odd and bad things begin to happen. But this is all resolved, in the haunting final chapter. Where as before it felt more like an investigation inside a mystery; the final chapter is just so haunting, cruel, and sadistic. But it does explore the full picture, so it all gets wrapped up, but in a rather gruesome fashion. I was intrigued, but only by a little by Weapons when it was originally released, as I was concerned it was going to be an average horror movie. But I am glad to say that it wasn’t. It’s a fascinating horror film, which puts you in a situation of faulty reasoning, as though whilst the first few chapters, have a scary side, it’s all delivered in a light, and ‘almost’ amusing way. But the final chapter, is not amusing at all (except for maybe the grisly ending); it is cruelly haunting!
