Yesterday I watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; and I really enjoyed it! Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Meng’er Zhang; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a superhero film, and the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Shang-Chi, who is forced to confront his past when his Father (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) claims to be hearing the voice of Shang-Chi’s Mother (Fala Chen) from behind a door in a mythical village. The film’s plot is kind of weird, as it looks like the filmmakers are trying to create something that is a mix of Aquaman, Thor: Ragnarok, and Kung Fu Panda 3. Despite this weird mutation of a plot though, it is one of the MCU’s more original films, deciding to be influenced by Asian Culture, and feature terrific fight scenes, with incredibly well imagined monsters, and really well done character development. It’s a film which is just really enjoyable, and whilst it looks like it’s going to be cliched or predictable, it doesn’t do anything of the sort. OK, that ending battle is rather overkill, and long; featuring things that could have been reserved for a sequel (or more likely the third film in a trilogy), but at the end of the day, this doesn’t detract from the film’s overall enjoyability!
