I first saw Seven Samurai about 11 years ago, and I immediately fell in love with it! It was such an amazing film, with a great story, some terrific acting, and a fantastic soundtrack. I loved every second of this incredible film.
The film’s trailer is almost an epic film all by itself. It starts out by highlighting the story in a post tense way, to highlight that this whole thing was in the past, and to create a suggestion that maybe this is something that actually happened. It talks about the village, and the brave Samurai who didn’t fight for ambition, but to protect the villagers from a group of bandits.
We then get a feast of information, telling us that the film is from (Akira Kurosawa) the man who directed Rashomon, before mentioning the banner the samurai fought under, and then revealing the first six key cast members, all the while a rather heroic soundtrack plays in the background.
But then the composition changes, as the trailer highlights the group’s wild card. A wild and merry black sheep played by Toshirô Mifune, with a rather jovial and clown-ish piece playing in the background.
We then get to see early shots of the epic battle taking place, as well as a potentially impossible relationship blossoming. By this point the trailer is over the halfway mark, but already feels like it’s gone on for a whole age. But for some reason you can’t stop watching it, like you’re hypnotized to the screen, like all great epics are capable of doing, no matter how long they are.
But, for a trailer, it finally starts wrapping it up, with shots of rain fall, and more battles, whilst highlighting the epically small, but epic nonetheless struggle that will unfold, should you decide to watch the whole film!
