I have just seen Meg 2: The Trench; and it was pretty fun! Directed by Ben Wheatley, and starring Jason Statham, Jing Wu, and Shuya Sophia Cai; Meg 2: The Trench is a monster movie based on the book The Trench by Steve Alten, and acts as a sequel to The Meg. Set some years after the events of the first film, this time Jason Statham, and his step daughter; plunge deep into the trench, and find more than just one Meg this time. Meg 2 does have some shortcomings. It’s a bit odd that Bingbing Li‘s character has been killed off, as this film could have really developed their onscreen relationship. Most of the returning cast are made less to look like strong heroes, and more like clowns. The villainous human’s add nothing but bad acting and annoyance to the plot. The walk in the trench, was so badly lit, you couldn’t tell who anyone was, or see any vital things needed to understand what was going. And the final fight between the two monsters, it’s not built up properly; there’s no sudden or eye catching surprise reveal, and it’s over in seconds. But, these issues, don’t take away the joy or fun of this film. They do make a messy ending, but still relatively fun and enjoyable to watch, with more of that sweet and juicy, on-purpose silliness, which made the previous Meg fun too. It’s not awkward, it’s fun, with plenty of action, and plenty on-screen appearances of the titular monster’s, plus some rather nice family moments too from the rather odd three person coupling father-uncle-daughter relationship!
