I bet you can’t guess where/who/(or maybe even what) I first heard about Lordi from? That’s right, my brother. OK, yes it is Eurovision related. I first saw videos/pictures of them performing briefly in the week leading up to the contest, but I didn’t take any notice until my brother said something along the lines of ‘You should see whose representing Finland!”, and in that instant, I easily knew what he was refencing.
Just quickly for anyone who is unaware of who/what Lordi is: Lordi is a Finnish Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band which was originally formed in 1992 by Mr. Lordi. Sometime later, the band adopted Monster costumes to wear during their performances, something which greatly helped them to win The Eurovision Song Contest in 2006.
Lordi’s performance at Eurovision was something of a landmark moment in my life. Growing up I had no real interest in music. The only CD’s I ever bought/received was some CD’s of The Smurfs singing pop songs, and then a bit later on some CD’s of Professional Wrestling related music. Most of the stuff in the charts I just found rather boring. Then, when Lordi played, I absolutely loved it. It was my first real memorable taste into the world of hard rock and heavy metal; and I never looked back!
For the first proper time in my life, I could confidently say I had a favourite band/artist; and it was Lordi. For the next weeks and months, I went on a crusade to discover more of their work, leading me to Lordi related websites, and then my first ever visit to YouTube to listen to songs from this amazing band.
This period of them being my favourite band sadly didn’t last, as after about three years I got heavily into Metallica, then Pendulum, followed by Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Scorpions, and now Iron Maiden. But the same type of genre has remained relatively persistent, and it all started with Lordi.
So, I thought it was about time to finally reveal which songs by Lordi are my favourite. Now there was a good selection to choose from, but sadly some songs don’t make it into the Top 5. But, on this blog I still like to give the honourable few outside the Top 5 a mention, and so here they are:
It Snows in Hell, Mr. Killjoy, Supermonstars (The Anthem of the Phantoms), They Only Come Out at Night, Bringing Back The Balls To Rock, Blood Red Sandman.
And so, without further ado, here are my Top Five Favourite Lordi Songs; Enjoy!
5. Bite It Like a Bulldog – This song features a nice but heavy going riff, that’s also deep in sound, but, picks up in speed and adrenaline, before then jumping into what is an easily memorable and catchy chorus. This chorus is so easy to remember, it’s one of those lyrics where you’ll find yourself randomly remembering it, some time and place, where you weren’t even thinking about it…or them. They are in your brain forever!
4. The Chainsaw Buffet – This song has a really nice, but heavy build-up, with plenty of instrumental before then jumping into it’s lyrics. It’s easy to understand what the title means: It’s a buffet featuring a chainsaw. You are not going to eat the chainsaw, rather the chainsaw is going to be used to turn you into the ‘main course’; which the song highlights so laid back and easily in the chorus. It’s one of those really simple sounding tunes, which allows the lyrics to take the stage; but the tune is still an important factor, particularly at the end, when it unleashes the adrenaline built up inside all this time!
3. Hard Rock Hallelujah – The song that launched my journey into the world of this band. It’s actually a pretty simple rock song really. It’s not the fastest, loudest, or even heaviest song in their repertoire, but it’s possibly the best song to introduce new fans to. It’s more slowed down pace – in comparison to other songs on this list – makes it easier to pick up. That doesn’t mean it’s not dark however. It features very dark lyrics, with a deep tone to them. It’s a great performance song, as it’s one that lights up a stage, and gets people involved in the music, even if it’s not their regular cup of tea!
2. Would You Love a Monsterman? – Whilst Lordi have already done a song with the word ‘anthem’ in it, this is probably their actual anthem. It’s an incredibly well put together song, as it features a great sound to build its rhythms on, but at the same time, it features terrific lyrics, which raise an important question, and argues the case quite well for the positive possibilities. And then there’s the mid section and solo, which just turns the adrenaline up, and turns an already pretty good song, into an EPIC masterpiece!
1. Devil Is A Loser – Due to my Christian upbringing, I am always a little turned off with song titles that feature certain words or phrases, and over the years worry about saying I like these songs. But as I am now a big fan of a certain Iron Maiden song with a similar title, I can sort of confidently move on from that a little. The thing with this song, is that it features an incredibly infectious riff. It’s something you can never un-hear, nor something you can ever say you don’t like. Its such a great tune, and its backed up with rather catchy lyrics; lyrics you want to join in with. The full song is a real adrenaline pumping song, something that makes you feel upbeat and alive to, and it just keeps going, and going, getting bigger and bigger, leading to an epic solo, followed by an almost abrupt ending! But how on earth do you slow something down, that won’t stop gaining speed!

I discovered Lordi through their Would You Love a Monsterman music video, the 2006 version and have been a fan ever since.

I prefer it to the original version, especially as it features OX in it.

The 2006 version has OX in it. The original from Get Heavy had Magnum on bass.
