Yesterday I watched Bank of Dave; and it was Absolutely Brilliant! Directed by Chris Foggin, and starring Joel Fry, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rory Kinnear, and based on a true(ish) story; Bank of Dave is a biographical comedy drama, about the real life experiences of David Fishwick, who wants to try and setup a local bank for local people, despite the objections by London’s elite financial institutions! I remember watching the original documentary series when it was first broadcast in 2012 on Channel 4. Bank of Dave from an outside perspective does says what it says on the tin. It tells the story, in a somewhat more fictionalised route of how Dave Fishwick decides to setup his bank, and at the same time highlights the struggles to get there. But when you watch the film more closely, you can see it actually tells an entirely different story. All that stuff about Dave happens more or less in the background; but the true story is a fish out of water tale. It tells the story of a man, who is down on his luck in his position as a lawyer, and gets to experience an almost alien culture to his own. He discovers something that was missing from his life; and as a result realises that it’s not all Grim up North, but instead it’s actually down South that’s horrifically Grim. It is a really nice feel good film, with a great core cast, an amazing story of passion in belief, as well as a terrific story of love between two characters, and even includes a live performance by the real Def Leppard! How many feel good movies end with Def Leppard playing live?!
