Yesterday I watched Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga; and it was pretty fun! Directed by David Dobkin, and starring Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Dan Stevens; Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is a romantic comedy film, about two close friends from a small town in Iceland, trying to pursue their dream of winning the Eurovision Song Contest! As a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, I was interested to see what this film would be like, but also worried if it was just going to be too much of a satirical take on the contest, by potentially poking too much fun at it, and those who watch it. As a representation of the contest, it’s actually pretty good. Watching the acts in the show perform is like watching the actual contest, plus the film has some good musical moments, some featuring well known stars from the contest in recent years (although strangley no Lordi). The film’s plot however, is awkwardly predictable, and a bit too long. The whole relationship side of the film, plus challengers to the relationship between Ferrell, and McAdams, is very predictable, and just slows down, what is a very long film. It’s far too long for this kind of story. It really struggles to keep hold of your attention. The film features several shocking, but also hilariously unforeseen moments, which will easily make you laugh, but these are sadly brief in length, and small in number. It’s fun in stages, and a film that will bring the occasional smile to fans of the Eurovision Song Contest, but it’s annoyingly too long for this kind of story!
I would have voted for the Belarusian entry: Running With The Wolves!
