Mini Film Review – Deadpool & Wolverine

I have just seen Deadpool & Wolverine; and it was a bit overkill! Directed by Shawn Levy, and starring Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Matthew Macfadyen; Deadpool & Wolverine is a super hero comedy movie, which sees the six year return of Deadpool, and seven year return of Wolverine, as they set out to try and save the world, possibly for the very final time. I feel very conflicted about this film. I’m serious, I like bits of it, but there’s one massive glarring issue with it. But in order to keep this ‘mini film review’ as mini as possible, I am just going to briefly list the film’s good bits, then potentially rant about the other thing. So firstly, the good bits (WARNING; the following review will contain spoilers, but it is hard to talk about this film’s good bits without mentioning them at all…):

  • It’s nice to see that I am not the only person totally annoyed by Disney canning the X-Men Film Series,
  • The film features cameo appearances by characters from classic, but largely forgotten (swept under the rug) superhero movies,
  • Characters who make cameo appearances include: Elektra, Blade, The Human Torch, and X-23,
  • The film features a cameo appearance by a character whose solo movie was never producedGambit,
  • The film features all the previous goodness that made the Deadpool film series Awesome,
  • It’s great to see Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine,
  • The supporting cast from the two previous films make a brief, but still decently glorious return,
  • The mid-credits features a compilation of footage from the 20th Century Fox Marvel years, which brought a real tear to my eye, like the X-Men Film Series had returned for just a few brief, but magnificent minutes, a long overdue tribute,
  • And it’s (occasionally) funny, like seriously funny.

The problem with this film, is that the plot is too long! The two previous Deadpool films were concise, and focussed. They told a story that satyed on point, and never deviated. This one is like watching three sepearate movies that have been squished together! The ending has nothing to do with the beginning, and the middle is overdone. The middle slows it down, way too much, and so when the finale finally comes, you’re too tired to care! It has it’s moments; from the comedic fight scenes, and the choice of music (and the mid-credits compilation); but by this point, it’s just too much! It’s out stayed it’s welcome, and not in a funny way…just a really sad way. Deadpool & Wolverine has many positive highs in it’s favour, but it is held together, by one really big sinking low!

It does prove however, that the time is right for an X-Men movie, old or new. Just make it…Please…?
