Yesterday I watched Kingsman: The Secret Service; and it was really good! Directed by Matthew Vaughn, and starring Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, and Samuel L. Jackson, and based on the comic book series of the same name; Kingsman: The Secret Service is an action comedy spy movie, about a street wise kid, who is recruited by a top secret spy organization, to prevent an eco-terrorist from fulfilling his diabolical dream. It is hard to really describe this film in a nutshell, as there’s quite a lot of stuff in it, but at no point does it become overpowering, or over-bearing. It has a good setup, by choosing an unlikely hero, and training him up in a series of intense tests. Meanwhile, the key villain starts to put his plans into action. This coin then flips constantly, as both situations turn up their own respective heats. This then leads to several outstanding, and frequently both violent, and hilarious moments, which set up the over-arching plot. Which then comes together in a nice bundle at the end of the film. It’s a nicely contained film, with plenty of surprises, which early on comes more in the form of the outstanding and recognisable stars attached to this film (which include – but is not limited to: Mark Hamill, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, Samantha Womack, and Jack Davenport). These surprises then jump to how detailed the violence is, and to what the big evil plan is; but it’s one that’s sort of relatable, given the method used in it’s approach, and the social atmosphere regarding the environment over the last decade. Altogether then, it’s a fun, and frequently goofy spy movie, that fans of James Bond will get a laugh out of, whilst also providing something fresh and new, especially for those who think there should be more detailed violence in films!
