Mini Film Review – Sonic The Hedgehog

Yesterday I watched Sonic the Hedgehog; and it was kind of fun! Directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey, and based on the video game series of the same name; Sonic the Hedgehog is an action adventure comedy about the titular hedgehog, partnering up with a small town sheriff, to avoid the mad scientist known as Dr. Robotnik. First off, I would just like to say how nice it is to see the return of Jim Carrey, particularly as a villain. He is one of the standout things in this film, and in a good way, it’s like he’s adapted his memorable stint as the Riddler in Batman Forever, and applied it to the character of Dr. Robotnik. It’s a film that has a split running right down the middle of it, dividing the good points and bad points. It’s not entirely a bad movie, but it does have it’s issues. Firstly, it is rather hard to watch this for the first time, and not remember what Sonic was originally going to look like (we just have to try much harder to gloss over that). The main issue, is that Sonic as a character (purely just this film though, for the time being) is rather annoying. His comedy is a bit too obvious, and frequently irritating, so much so that you can easily get bored of him, which isn’t great as the film is all about him, mostly. What is good though is the human side. The human characters are all terrific, and their comedy is actually funny. The film is truly enriched by their presence, and it can feel like a loss when they are not in the picture. The special effects are also top of the line, and the overall story is nice and simple to follow. Like I said before, it’s not a bad film, and it does suggest some promise; it’s just the titular character that’s the main issue here…which makes it a very big issue!
