Mini Film Review – Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Yesterday I watched Sonic the Hedgehog 2; and it was a lot of fun! Directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey, and based on the video game series of the same name; Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an action comedy film, and sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog. Following on from the events of the first film; Sonic, and his new long-time-pal Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), need to stop Dr. Robotnik, and his new red Echidna friend Knuckles (Idris Elba), from gaining the Master Emerald! It was only about a month ago that I saw the first film, so it was pretty easy to jump into this next one, which feels like a 100% improvement! Don’t get me wrong, the first film is decently enjoyable, just a little uncomfortable with it’s over the top and predictable comedy. This tme around though, everything fits together very delicately. The story is action packed, and pretty epic too, whilst also providing room for shocks and surprises. The comedy has also improved tremendously, with some genuinley laugh out loud funny moments too. Old cast members easily remind you, of why they were the best part of the previous film, with their roles now being enriched by some brand new, and ocassionally monumental characters. Although I can’t help but wonder if Idris Elba is the right person to be voicing Knuckles, as his voice just makes the character look awkward to be around, rather than the cool character he appears in the video games (it reminds me of the imposter Homer, in “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes” of The Simpsons)?  Also the final battle, whilst ambitiously beautiful, is a bit long winded. But above any little niggles, this is a very fun, action packed movie, which still provides time for some amusing references, that will make classic Sonic fans smile!
