I have just seen Sonic the Hedgehog 3; and it was really nice! Directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, and Keanu Reeves, and based on the video game series of the same name; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a comedy action movie, which sees the already established heroes, taking on a new threat, in the form of Shadow the Hedgehog! This film will instantly draw a smile on the face of fans like me, who love the game Sonic Adventure 2; as it features a lot of nice references to that game, from both the plot, and even the soundtrack. The film features less moments of laugh out loud comedy than the previous film, but when they do come, you will find it hard to stop laughing. The film places the more established human cast off to the side, to focus more on characters from the games. This though isn’t all that bad. Yes; you do occassionally miss them, but the decision to focus on introducing and developing new characters is so well done, you’ll find it hard to even think about missing the others. Plus it is also nice to find a role for Krysten Ritter (it feels like she should be in more things, but it can feel like years between appearances). But by far the best thing about this film, is how nice it is. It has plenty of heart-warming moments between friends, but it’s the moments between Shadow and Maria (Alyla Browne) that stand out the most. Even though Shadow is a very dark character, there is reasoning behind this, a hidden trauma that has turned him this way, but an understandable one based on raw human emotions that anyone can connect with. And it all inevitably leads to reconciliation, plus a climactic (if overly long, but still decently fun) grand finale (I can still hear the theme from Sonic Adventure 2 going around, and around in my head)!
