Mini Film Review – Sinners

I went to see Sinners on Saturday; and it was interesting! Directed by Ryan Coogler, and starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo; Sinners is a horror film about twin brothers, who return to their hometown and set up a Juke Joint in an old sawmill, only for it to be attacked on opening night by a supernatural force. I was expecting this to be a truly terrifying experience, and to begin with, it was going really well. It starts up by mentioning a terrible horror from the night before, and includes some really shocking moments. The film however spends it’s first entire half, just setting up character backstories, and doesn’t really feed anything that could be in anyway considered horror, or even scary. And even when it does start to feed the spookier goings on, it’s very placid in it’s approach. Even when things really begin to kick-off, it still doesn’t create anything that makes you jump, or want to hide behind the sofa. It’s not really a horror, film, or if it is, it’s a very pleasant and easy going one. If anything, it’s more an action drama. Although saying that, you may find it difficult to understand a good third of what everyone is saying, as the dialogue is rather muted out by other sounds. It’s not necessarily a bad film, it’s just not what you expect it to be, so perhaps it needs a second viewing to better understood. But what isn’t a let down in any fashion, is the practically perfect soundtrack. The music in this film is superbly top notch, featuring a range of styles, includding country, blues, heavy rock/metal, and even a live performance of the classic Irish song “Rocky Road to Dublin“; and for just that alone, it’s totally worth it!
