Mini Film Review – Madame Web

Yesterday I watched Madame Web; and it was…(pausing for dramatic effect)…pretty dull! Directed by S.J. Clarkson, and starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor, and based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name; Madame Web is a superhero film, about a paramedic, who after a near death experience, starts seeing, and experiencing events before they happen! I am aware that this film didn’t do great financially or critically, but I fancied giving it a go. And the overall experience was…a bit dull. It felt like there was an issue with lighting, as some scenes weren’t very well lit, or just generally off. There’s too many large gaps between incidents after Web discovers her powers, and for a superhero film, you’d think they would have got to the point a lot sooner. The villain (Tahar Rahim) had no real backstory, so you do wonder how he got his powers, especially if the Spider merely just shows him how he will die. Half-way through, it’s like one film is totally abandoned, and a new one begins. The film’s pacing is generally off, and the scope is too big. The whole return to Peru bit could have been shortened down to Web merely seeing it all in the past per her abilities. It’s a bit off, and pretty dull, which is shame; because it starts off, and ends, rather well.

IMDb

The paramedic scenes at the start, are very action packed, plus give an early insight into the lead character, helping to portray her exciting lifestyle, but difficult past. The final act’s action and fight scenes are very exciting, and you can’t help but think or feel, that this is how the whole film should have gone. It’s not an outright awful film, it’s just very misguided, by having a middle bit which squanders the talent of it’s four lead actors. If it had been more like how it started, and ended, then it could have been something far greater!
