Yesterday I watched Frankenstein; and it was really, really, really, good! Directed by Guillermo del Toro, and starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth, and based on the 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley; Frankenstein is a gothic science fiction film, which follows the life of Victor Frankenstein, whose experiments in creating life, create serious consequences! I personally have never read Frankenstein, but I sort of get a base idea from it thanks to numerous interpretations over the years, with my most prominent being the 2004 film Van Helsing. Well this is a very different kettle of fish. The film is told over three parts. The first providing a way to tell the overall story by introducing the two key characters. Victor Frankenstein tells his part of the story, and it’s an interesting one. It explores his difficult up-bringing, and to how he chose his field of medicine. It then goes down the route of introducing friends, relations, and challenges; as he is given the resources to proceed. This initially goes well, but soon goes down hill. Then the Creature explains what happened next, which is very tragic, as a man (David Bradley) who sees the creature in a good way, perishes. The story tells of not a thing, but a person, shunned from a world that chooses looks over personality. It was a seriously good experience, as it explores elements of the human condition, through love, tragedy and death, but at the same time tells the story of a man, whose desire to escape his father’s (Charles Dance) will, makes him just as ruthless, whilst also showing the beauty of those, others would consider a beast!
