Mini Book Review – The Hummingbird Killer

Recently I have been reading The Hummingbird Killer; and it was Fantastic! Written by Finn Longman, and published by Simon and Schuster, The Hummingbird Killer is a young adult thriller, and sequel to The Butterfly Assassin. Set a few years after the events of the first book, Isabel Ryans (or the Moth as she is known) feels like life is going in a more positive direction as she moves in with a new flatmate, and gets part time job at a local library; but the good times were never going to last! Within just a few pages of this book, I instantly remembered why the first book was so enjoyable. The early story is nice and pleasant. Ok, yes; it is about the life of a young contract killer, but the moments where Isabel makes new friends, and starts a new social life, are so nice and relaxing to read. But things take a sinister turn quickly, and as the story unfolds, all the positives melt away, but at an excruciatingly slow speed. As the book begins to reach it’s climax, it does feel like it’s going to become annoyingly predictable. But then the twists come, one after another, after another, and so on, and so on. It’s a really gripping story, one that takes you in with the promise of a good life, and introduces new characters to instantly fall in love with, only then to take it all away, once the roller coaster has reached only the first drop!
