Mini Film Review – Jojo Rabbit

Last night, I went to see Jojo Rabbit; and it was pleasantly enjoyable! Based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens, Directed by Taika Waititi and Starring Waititi and Scarlett Johansson; Jojo Rabbit is a comedy film set in the final days of World War 2 Berlin, where young boy Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) discovers a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) hiding in his house. Jojo Rabbit works well as the dramatized comedy that it is. It pokes fun at the higher ranking members of the German Army by turning the hilarity on themselves. While all this is going on, the film tells the story of the German people; particularly it’s youth, and shows their devotion and nationalist belief; displaying how they really saw their Leader, as a celebrity, and possibly a rock star of the time! It’s very similar in scope to The Last King of Scotland, in that it shows the leader as a positive character, only to gently knock down the walls until the true image is revealed. Then, while that is going on, we have a heart-felt, and chucklesome relationship between a boy and a girl, as they go through this experience together. The film does not hold back on the truthful, brutal drama; but still finds time to sprinkle on Waititi’s own personal comedy touch, creating quite a charming little film. It’s quite possibly; a future classic!
