Mini Film Review – Gamera vs. Gyaos

Yesterday I watched Gamera vs. Gyaos; and it was really good! Directed by Noriaki Yuasa, and starring Kôjirô Hongô, Naoyuki Abe, and Reiko Kasahara; Gamera vs. Gyaos is a Japanese Monster Movie, featuring the giant Turtle Gamera, as he takes on the formidable force of Gyaos, who has appeared after a string of volcanic eruptions! I really enjoyed watching Gamera vs. Barugon a couple of weeks ago, so was now a bit more excited to see this entry. Yes, the suits are still not up to the same code as another monster film series at the same time from the same country, but it’s very easy to look past them, due to the film’s rather gripping plot. It tells the story of the sudden appearance of Gyaos, who for quite a while looks totally invincible. This though allows the film time to really go in-depth with scientific explanations, to better understand how Gyaos could be defeated. The fight sequences are pretty cool, they do though waste a little time by repeating the same shot over and over again, losing some of the fights’ fluidity. But this doesn’t detract from the finished product, which allows plenty of time to highlight the greed of individuals wishing to make a lot of money. The only thing that mildly irk’s me, is that Kôjirô Hongô plays a different character than who he was in Barugon; which is a shame because his relationship with Kyôko Enami‘s character was really interesting, and it would have been nice to see it continue. But again, this was merely just a mild niggle; in what was overall an exceptional monster movie!
