Mini Film Review – Mortal Kombat II

I have just been out to see Mortal Kombat II; and I really enjoyed it! Directed by Simon McQuoid, and starring Adeline Rudolph, Karl Urban, and Jessica McNamee, and based on the video game series of the same name; Mortal Kombat II is a martial arts fantasy film, and sequel to the 2021 film Mortal Kombat! Following on from the events of the previous film (don’t worry, I have totally forgotten what happened as well), the tournament is finally about to begin, but Earthrealm‘s defenders are short one person, so they turn to a washed up movie star! The 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation; is a pretty poor film with a contradictory plot. It does though have one great moment…this:

This moment, with the classic MK theme, and the classic voice over shouting ‘Mortal Kombat’, just turns the whole picture around, and really makes you feel proud to be a fan of MK. Well, this might be the new benchmark. Mortal Kombat II is a really cool film. The plot is sort of self explanatory, and decently easily to follow, but much like the previous film, does get rather lost towards the end. Also most of the characters in the previous film do get a little lost in the background, but thanks to the five year difference, it’s not really an issue! But where the plot occassionally struggles, everything else is right on the money. The film features an amazing cast of classic MK characters, including (but excluding the ones who appeared in the previous film):

The fight scenes are epic! Still not up to the choreography quality of The Raid, but potentially far more brutal. Plus it has the occassional moment of laughter, but not in a totally awkward fashion. I seriously enjoyed this movie. From start to finish I was captivated. This could very well be the new champion of Movies based on Video Games!
