I have just seen Godzilla Minus Zero; and it was pretty good! Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, and starring Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, and Masami Nagasawa; Godzilla Minus Zero is a Japanese Monster Movie, and sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Two years after Godzilla‘s defeat, a new monster has appeared, but this one can fly, and has the potential to deliver far greater levels of destruction than Godzilla did! King Ghidorah is introduced very early on, and carries a couple of nice references to Ghidorah’s original movie debut: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Pretty much from the get-go, it’s all about King Ghidorah, and it goes into terrific detail from his original sighting, to an incredible dog fight early on. Whilst all this is going on, there are fears of Godzilla’s return, whilst a sinister subplot develops underneath. The monsters, look amazing! Especially King Ghidorah, one of his finest appearances to date, which makes his American Movie debut in 2019 look rather amateur.
But, the film does rather lack a consistant approach to showing plenty of monster sightings. Whenever King Ghidorah or Godzilla are on screen, it’s a glorious film, and so worth the three year wait (especially the rather epic moment Godzilla visit’s New York)! But there’s a bit too much human stuff in between. Several human scenes drag on quite a bit, and you would rather they just got to the point. There are elements of mirrored politics between then and now, whilst also pointing out hummanity’s failings when all it does is destroy, than make peace. Minus one featured a lot of human drama, it was more a human movie, than a monster movie (like Colossal), but it still featured plenty of Godzilla sightings in-between, to keep the story on-point. This film’s desire to be bigger than the previous film, seems to have chosen way too much human stuff (including an overly-long and predictable ending, and the similarity between Min Tanaka‘s character and Gendo Ikari), and not enough monster stuff. It’s a good film, and I really enjoyed it, but they could have cut out some of the more less required human moments…or just made them quicker!
