Mini Film Review – The Great Flood

Yesterday I watched The Great Flood; and it was very interesting! Directed by Byung-woo Kim, and starring Kim Da-mi, Kwon Eun-sung, and Park Hae-soo; The Great Flood is a South Korean science fiction disaster movie, about a mother and son trying to escape their apartment building, whilst sudden flood waters continue to rise! From the get-go, the film is a superb visual treat, as it creates a very real flood, with amazing imagery of giant waves, and water climbing staircases, at an incredible rate. The story starts off nice and simple too, as it’s about a single mother, trying to rescue her son, who loves the idea of going for a swim. But hidden behind this plot, there are subtleties to look out for, ones which makes the experience far more serious. Firstly, the idea is floating around that the lead character is an important member of a major experiment, and secondly, her decdeased lover, died in a tragic accident, when their car fell into the water. As all this is explained, further floods come, increasing the adrenaline; leading up to the film’s defining moment, when you finally realize, that something isn’t right here. It starts off as an intense, but simple disaster movie, but then evolves into a more complex and intriguing science fiction film, with elements of the Human Instrumentality Project from Neon Genesis Evangelion, before then leaving it all behind, to become a hard hitting family drama. It begins as a visually powerful piece, but ends as a more emotionally dominant one!
