Another place I would like to visit in the hopefully not too distant future is somewhere I have visited quite a few times: The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway! I have visited it quite a few times over the last decade, visiting it for a birthday treat a couple of times. I am now pretty sure that it is one of my favourite places to visit. I first visited the railway the day before I started year 2 at primary school, I went with my family and a best friend. I then visited it again just before I started high school. I have visited it several times now and it has always been a fun visit.
Whilst there are many cool sights along the way, the best thing for me is the incredible steam trains that haul passengers along the route. The trains themselves carry some personality, and its fun to look out and see which trains are using the route. My favourite train was always River Esk, a black locomotive, but I think my new favourite is the Whillan Beck, a blue locomotive which joined the railway in 2016. I think the excitement of a new locomotive for the line has caused it to go up in my rankings.
What’s really cool about the railway is that next to the railway is the Cumbrian Coast Line, which means you can visit it by train, no need to necessarily drive there. Also, if you are on a budget, you can include a return travel ticket on the Ravenglass Railway on your ordinary train travel ticket, the full price is included. So if you were living in Barrow-in-Furness for example; you could buy a return ticket to Dalegarth (the terminus of the Ravenglass railway), and then that ticket is usable on both the mainline and on the Ravenglass Railway. It’s a pretty cool system.
So, all in all it’s a pretty cool place to visit; for more reasons than one!
