2013 was an up and down year for me personally; but one thing that was definitely an up was Pacific Rim! During this time I knew of the then upcoming 2014 Godzilla film; but there wasn’t much info about that film other than the odd new poster here and there. But in the meantime, there was another Monster Movie to look forward to.
Pacific Rim for me came out of the blue. I had heard of it when researching the second Thor film, as the producers were waiting for Idris Elba to finish Pacific Rim first, and then get to work on it. I saw the odd image here and there too, but there was not much to go on. Then the first major trailer landed, and I didn’t want to stop watching it!
The trailer begins with some little tasters, such as shots of people running around, the odd jet fighter flying around, and a giant skeleton on the back of an aircraft carrier. Also we get told that Guillermo del Toro was involved in the film’s production. Charlie Hunnam‘s voice is then heard giving us details, along with the first shot of one of the Kaiju’s.
This is then followed by images of people in strange suits, and then images of the film’s Jaeger Robots. This leads to our first iconic scene, backed up with the voice of Glados from the Portal games, we see these titanic robots rise out of the water, preparing for battle. What follows is an action montage of scenes from character inclusions, to robots fighting monsters, and more. Plus we get a real sense of scale to the size of the Jaegers.
In hindsight it looks and feels like a pretty simple trailer, deciding just to feature the bare minimum, and holdback some crucial details. But this is more than enough to get a taste of the epic battle to come. Yes the action and music might be minimal, but again, we see all we need to get a simple enough taste, the get super excited by what’s about to come.
It is a simple, yet incredibly effective trailer!
