Before I begin, I just want to say; that I have never really been a fan of Scooby-Doo. I have seen the cartoons many times on TV, but I never really got the point of them, or enjoyed them. Nor have I actually seen this movie; but the trailer is very funny!
I think it must have been when me and my family went to see Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at the cinema that I first saw this trailer. Then I saw it again sometime later, on the VHS copy of Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns.
The thing that makes this trailer so cool, and funny, is that it only gets revealed at the very end that it’s a film about Scooby-Do. For the entirety of the trailer leading up to the reveal, it looks like a trailer for something else entirely: Batman!
The imagery is all there. It’s dark, there’s a moon, a gothic house, and some bats of course. The music is dark and heroic, either like the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher film’s, mixed with the Animated series. The trailer’s voice over even talks about this hero, “standing watching over mankind”, “moving in shadows”, “cloaked in mystery”. This then all leads up to the mysterious figure standing by the window, with the pointy Batman like ears, and what could look like a cloak over his back.
But then it turns around, and we discover it’s actually Scooby-Doo, who talks briefly. I can remember the cinema bursting out in laughter when that happened!
It’s a silly and funny trailer, as it looks like a new Batman film is coming, but then there’s this funny turnaround. They decided to do something funny, yet incredibly memorable, rather than take the most obvious, and forgettable route.
Yes, I am not a fan of Scooby-Doo, but I am a fan of this trailer!
