Released in 1978 as part of the band’s debut album Van Halen; Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love is a song by the American rock band Van Halen! Written by Eddie Van Halen, the song was not presented to his band mates until a year after he wrote it. Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love was one of the few songs in the band’s repertoire during the David Lee Roth era that Sammy Hagar was willing to sing at concert’s, following Roth’s departure from the band.
A couple of years ago, I actually learned this song on bass guitar; and I was surprised to discover how easy it was for a bass beginner to play, as it was just three to four notes; all the way through. Well I say easy, the number of notes was easy, but the speed and repetition for a casual player caused a real strain on my fingers. But it was still a fun song to rock out to. I actually first heard this song thanks to a rather awesome scene from an episode of South Park.
The song begins with a great picking sound, before it then jumps full speed into it’s main riff. It then just carries this on almost for the full length off the song, backed up by some powerful lyrics. We get the odd guitar solo here and there, and even a nice lull in proceedings, which is nice and peaceful, allowing a moment to catch your breath before firing back at full speed once more.
It’s a pretty good hard rock song, one which draws you in by it’s incredible intro, and then blasts out at full force. An easy song to get into, and one that you’ll find hard to stop listening to over and over again!
