Top 5 Films I Am Looking Forward To In 2023

2023 for a time looked like it was going to be a rather boring year of movies! Every now and then I like to look at the lists of films due for release the next year or so, and see what’s coming. But when I looked at 2023; nothing really stood out!

There are a good number of films due for release in 2023 that I would like to see; but there wasn’t any sort of main highlight. Not like 2022 when there were two big films that I desperately wanted to see (Jurassic World: Dominion, and The Batman). But 2023 had no real standout. When I looked at the list further, it felt like the new Blade film would be my number 1 pick, but that’s been pushed back, so it’s not going to be that!

But then, in November, two films were announced for a possible release in 2023; and then I had two standouts to look forward to. So; 2023 is now looking a lot better.

So, as is the annual tradition; I thought I would share with you my top 5 picks for the coming year. And as always there are some unlucky others who are worthy of a mention; and they are:

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, John Wick: Chapter 4, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Kraven the Hunter, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

And so without further ado; here are the Top 5 Films I am most looking forward to seeing in the coming year, also known as 2023; Enjoy!

5. Oppenheimer – I am tempted to take this film with a pinch of salt, given the mess that was Tenet. I am just hoping this time around they get the sound right, so I can actually hear and understand what everyone is saying. It’s still exciting to know and find out what Christopher Nolan‘s next project is, and this one still sounds rather exciting, but I am still very cautious about it, especially given the sound quality of Tenet!

4. Meg 2: The TrenchThe Meg was a surprisingly enjoyable movie, one of my standout favourites from 2018. The Meg 2 continues the story on (with some potential recasting’s), whilst still continuing the story of the book series at the same time. Not much details as of yet as to what the film will entail, other than it involving a giant Megalodon shark, but still, if it’s anything like the first film, then it should be a very entertaining movie!

3. Shazam! Fury of the Gods – With what feels like a constant stream of negative press coming out of DC Comics‘s movie headquarters; we may as well just enjoy these few DC movies being made whilst we still can, as this, along with everything else is probably going to get cancelled in 20 seconds from now! Shazam! was a surprisingly enjoyable movie, with a great cast, and a really emotionally fueled story. Shazam 2 looks like it’s going to carry on all of these things, but with the added detail of Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren as the film’s two lead villains! Should be pretty good…providing it actually gets released!

2. Godzilla 2023 – The first of my two standouts for the coming year, is the announcement of a new Toho Godzilla film. Very little about the film’s premise is available, other than it will take place pre 1954, set between 1945 and 1947. The film will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who ironically has directed Godzilla before, with Godzilla appearing in cameo in Yamazaki’s 2007 drama Always: Sunset on Third Street 2. Whilst this is likely to be a very exciting film to discover, it only makes it to number 2 on my list, due to the high probability, that even if the film is released this year, I probably won’t get to see it, until a year or two later, depending on if it gets an American or hopefully UK release!

1. Gamera: Rebirth – The number 1 film that I am most looking forward to being released this year though, I may actually get to see, due to the announcement that Netflix are distributing it. The more recent of the two to be announced is the exciting news that there is going to be a new Gamera movie. Very exciting given that the last film; Gamera The Brave was released in 2005. In all that time, barely anything Gamera related announced, other than that spoof like trailer released in 2015. Ironically, ShĂ»suke Kaneko; the director of the Heisei Trilogy did pitch an idea for a new film, but only after the studio; Kadokawa had already made thier own plans for the series. But this new one does have Kaneko’s support. So whilst not much is known as to what this new one will entail, I am already super excited about it!
