Mini Film Review – Flight

Yesterday I watched Flight; and it was rather interesting! Directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starring Denzel Washington, Kelly Reilly, and Don Cheadle; Flight is a drama film loosely inspired by the plane crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261. The film follows the life of an alcoholic airline pilot who is branded a hero after saving nearly everyone onboard his plane after it crashes, but following the crash, suspicion falls on the pilot as his alcoholism starts to get more and more noticeable! It’s easy to initially see this film as an action film, as it’s pretty much sold on the footage of the miraculous crash landing. But that does happen very early on in the film, and as time goes by it becomes more and more focused on the life of the alcoholic pilot, and especially focusses on the lives of those around him, who go steadily draw away from him, as he becomes more and more unattractive. That’s sort of what makes this film so interesting, as the lead character’s behavior makes him more and more unsavory, and you really start to draw yourself away from him and his behavior. But it’s not just about Washington, as several key players also help in the characters eventual redemption. But they are not necessarily all savory character’s; John Goodman‘s character is not helping the situation when he’s on screen, but he’s so wacky, it really helps brighten up the often grim scenes. But again that could be the point as his character is trying to be on the side of the addictive lifestyle. So altogether; both a very surprising, albeit a rather interesting film!
