It’s great having friends over to watch a movie! It’s an opportunity to socialize, maybe eat some nice food, sit back, relax, watch a movie, and possibly laugh at jokes based on subtlties within the narrative itself. But whilst it can be a good time to watch a movie and have a laugh, there’s something which has the possibility to cause great stress before the night begins; choosing which movie to watch?!
This has always been an issue, as everyone has differing tastes, and some would like to watch something new, where as others would prefer to watch something they have already watched before. Now whilst choosing a good takeaway could cause the same level of distress, there are fewer fast food options in the world, than there are films.
So (in a desperate desire to try and find inspiration for a blog post) I thought I would share with you some options for your next movie night, thus lowering the amount of viable options, and hopefully reducing the number of arguments (although that is not a guarantee). The following 5 films are in no particular order, and for this post cover several genres (in the future I might cover more genre’s). Anyway, without further ado, here are Five Films that I would like to provide as Suggestions for your next Movie Night; Enjoy!
5. The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) – Based on the 1844 novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas; The Count of Monte Cristo follows the life of Edmond Dantès (Jim Caviezel), who is falsely imprisoned for over a decade, before escaping, and plotting revenge on all those who sent him there. It’s a really simple plot to follow, as it keeps the focus on Dantès, and only changes perspective briefly, when events have an effect on those around him. The scenes in prison are tragic and shocking, whilst the escape plan is very interesting, followed by a detailed revenge plan. Plus the part of Abbé Faria is played by the original Dumbledore (Richard Harris)!
4. Mimic – One for fans of Guillermo del Toro. This science fiction horror film is frequently overlooked in comparison to most of his other films, which is a shame, because it’s actually pretty interesting. The film takes place in New York City, where an incurable virus is killing hundreds of children. So scientist Dr. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino), decides to create a new species of insect which kills off all the Cockroaches that carry the disease. The ‘Judas Breed’ as they’re called, was supposed to die out, but many years later, there are some strange creatures appearing in the New York subway system. It’s a really cool and interesting film, which follows several people from different backgrounds, being drawn together to fight the threat (simillar in fashion to The Strain). It does have a bit of an issue with the special effects, but once you are able to look past that, you can really start to appreciate this very unique experience!
3. Blackfish – Best way to summarise this film, would be as follows: There have been very few recorded instances of wild Killer Whales attacking humans. None of these attacks though have led to fatalities. There have been over 30 recorded instances of captive Killer Whales attacking humans. Four of these instances have led to a human fatality. And most shocking of all, three of them were commited by the same whale: Tilikum! Blackfish is a chilling documentary about captive Orcas in general, but a lot of the focus is on the acts committed by Tilikum, as well as the possible causes as to why he became so dangerous. It’s a very interesting docu-film, but be warned, it can be a very harrowing experience too!
2. Spy Hard – Time for something uplifting and funny now. Spy Hard is a spy parody movie starring Leslie Nielsen. Much like a James Bond film, there is an opening title sequence (sung by “Weird Al” Yankovic), and then telling the story of agent WD-40, who has been given the job of saving the world. But whilst it is a parody of James Bond (including gadgets), the film makes reference to many popular films released at the same time, like Speed, Sister Act, and Home Alone to name but a few. It is such a funny film, and one that everyone should see at least once in the lives!
1. The Beekeeper – Rounding off this generic selection with a hard hitting action film starring Jason Statham, who decides to bring the pain to a group of phishing scammers. Online scams are becomming a harder thing to avoid, and even when one is brought to justice, several more pop up to replace them. So why can’t there be a Batman like figure, to shut them down once and for all? Well, that’s what we get here, and it is justifiably awesome to watch!
