Mini Video Game Review – Star Fox

Recently I have been playing Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2; and it was pretty cool! Developed by Velan Studios, and starring Hunter McCoy, Andrew Russell, and Erik Braa; Star Fox is a rail shooter video game, and remake of the 1997 game Star Fox 64. My only real experience of anything featuring Fox McCloud, is Fox and Falco‘s appearances in the Super Smash Bros games. It was quite a fun experience. It takes the often tricky genre of Fighter Pilot games, and makes it both more simple, and accessible. It’s largely a on-rail-shooter, which means you don’t have to totally worry about flying, as the ship is in a fixed position, with some sliding and straffing needed to avoid obstacles. Although there are a couple of levels, which expands the area, allowing players more freedom, in flying, rather than just being stuck in one position. The controls are pretty simple too, but it was annoying that I had to repeatedly press the fire button, to shoot lots of lasers, as holding it down causes a charged shot instead. Also there’s a lack of camera control, which would have been helpful, when I wanted to see past the ship. But these are just little niggles compared to the main problem. It’s a bit quick! It’s a very short story, and not one that then goes further by way of surprise. You just do seven-ish levels, each one less than 10 minutes, and the game is over! Sure there’s options to unlock more, but for it’s hefty price tag, you’d expect at least triple the content the main game actually features. But despite one glarring hole, the game was a very fun experience!
