Mini Film Review – Us

Yesterday I watched Us; and it was very creepy! Directed by Jordan Peele, and starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex; Us is a psychological horror film, about a family, who are attacked in the night, by a family of doppelgängers calling themselves the ‘Tethered’! I sort of knew what to expect with this film before I saw it, having given it a passive look many years ago. So I knew about the doppelgangers, and that it wasn’t just one group of people affected. It starts out very interesting, and continues to build interest, while still creating intense moments, just to shock your attention to fully awake mode, so you don’t miss the worst things to come. But whilst it carries a lot of interest, some of the symbolism, and even explanation can be hard to understand, without further reading. But it’s a film told in stages. So firstly there’s the mystery of something that happened back in the 1980’s, to the other family’s appearance, and initial violent horror. But then it adopts a more slasher-like route, as it pushes the obvious horror aside, and develops core characters from victims to unlikely heroes, before then going for the final explanation, and mega twist. There’s a lot going on in the foreground, whilst also a really dark story in the background, told in a chilling fashion towards the end. It was an interesting and creepy film, and one that you can’t look away from; even if your own doppelganger decides to show up!
