Mini Film Review – Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Last night, I finally managed to watch Hellboy II from start to finish; and it was pretty good! Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, this film released in 2008 was a sequel to the first Hellboy film from 2004 once again directed by Del Toro. It features more or less the same cast except for the lack of Rupert Evans who doesn’t appear at all. The key cast though of Ron Perlman, Doug Jones and Selma Blair still feature prominently. This time around Hellboy is trying to prevent the awakening of an indestructible army of Gold Soldiers by a returning Elf prince (Luke Goss). The film’s plot is nicely weaved through a rather discombobulated heap which at the start seems to dodge in an out of ideas, but then the real goal is nicely put together as the dodging earlier on makes total sense. The film has some great set pieces, with the brilliantly created and imaginative Troll Markets really standing out as one of the film’s best pieces and moments. The fight scenes are well choreographed with even the smallest piece of detail looking really cool. Add to this the film’s well written comedy and awesomely developed characters, and altogether you have an incredible film; and easily one of the best super hero movies ever made!
