Yesterday I watched Transcendence; and I rather liked it! Directed by Wally Pfister, and starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, and Paul Bettany; Transcendence is a science fiction thriller, about an IT specialist, who after being poisoned by terrorists, decides to upload his consciousness into computers to create an artificial intelligence. I originally wanted to see this film when it came out, but I didn’t get much of a chance, so it has been on my to do list for a while now. I know this film has something of a bad rep; but I rather enjoyed it. The collection of imagery was top of the class, and also rather beautiful. The film comes across like a science fiction thriller form the 1990’s, and carries a real charm with it. It starts off small, builds up, then goes down some interesting routes. It’s like watching a Michael Crichton novel come to life. It has this deep root into the world of science fiction, but takes it’s time to weave in tension and drama. Ok, the ending is a bit confusing, doesn’t really make much sense, but still, it’s a rather beautiful film to watch, as the eyes are just indulged with the visuals, whilst the story takes care of the mind. A very thrilling film; featuring a good cast, some interesting twists and turns, and a very cool and pretty visual style, which sort of takes you back in time too; to a time of some other classic science fiction thrillers!
